Looking Back, Moving Forward: A Gallery Retrospective of Miniatures
Exhibit C Gallery will open its newest exhibition, “Looking Back, Moving Forward: A Gallery Retrospective of Miniatures,” on Monday, July 1, 2024. The new exhibition highlights the many talented artists who have showcased work at the gallery over the last ten years with miniature pieces 5x5 and under.
Displaying artwork from 46 First American artists, the show aims to highlight the diversity within First American art.
“The variety of mediums and subject matter in these art pieces is a true testament to the rich cultural tapestry of First American traditions and creativity,” said Alexandra Bivens, Exhibit C Gallery manager. “In these art pieces, viewers can see the stories, legends, practices and teachings of numerous First American tribes and cultures.”
With more than 100 individual works on display, including portrait and landscape paintings, watercolors, sculptures, wood inlay, metal smithing, pottery and photography, the exhibition celebrates the artists' diverse styles, techniques and cultural expressions.
Exhibit C Gallery celebrates its tenth anniversary in July. The gallery was opened in July 2014 by the Chickasaw Nation to showcase and celebrate First American artists. Over the past ten years, Exhibit C has featured more than 75 First American artists from nearly two dozen federally recognized tribes.
“In this exhibit, ‘Looking Back, Moving Forward: A Gallery Retrospective of Miniatures,’ we knew we wanted to extend an invitation to all the incredibly talented artists who have partnered with Exhibit C over the past ten years,” said Bivens. “The goal is to showcase and celebrate the diversity in First American art while also extending a heartfelt thank you to the artists who have each played a pivotal role in the growth and success of Exhibit C.”
This exhibition marks another milestone for the gallery as it will be the last exhibition in the gallery’s current location. In early 2025, Exhibit C Gallery is moving to a 10,000 sq. ft. location adjacent to the First Americans Museum and OKANA in the Horizons District.
“’Looking Back, Moving Forward: A Gallery Retrospective of Miniatures’ symbolizes a condensed yet comprehensive reflection of Exhibit C’s evolution over the last decade and the limitless journey that lies ahead,” said Bivens. “Our final exhibit in our current Bricktown honors the profound contributions of the artists who have helped pave the way for our expansion into new horizons.”
Exhibit C Gallery is hosting a Mini Show reception and ten-year anniversary party on Saturday, July 13, 2024, from 4 to 6 p.m. The public is invited to come and go throughout the event.
“Looking Back, Moving Forward: A Gallery Retrospective of Miniatures” is open at Exhibit C Gallery located at 1 E. Sheridan Avenue through October 31, 2024. All artists’ works are for sale. For more information, call 405-767-8900 or visit online at ExhibitCGallery.com.
