Jake Waytula was recognized as a Cherokee Emerging Artist in 2015. He has had an interest in art from an early age and has continued to perfect his technique in visual arts. His talent has been recognized and applauded by other First American artisans.
He has a unique presentation of subject matter. Figures are drawn and come to life through a shaped formation of a detailed basket weave. Jake is inspired by Cherokee myths and legends, and tends to favor owls, deer, and wolves. He is self-taught and prefers pen and ink, pencil and graphite mediums.
Jake is the son and grandson of Cherokee National Treasures, Vivian Garner Cottrell and the late Betty Scraper Garner.
